Leighton Buzzard Schools Guide

Leighton Buzzard has a great choice of schools. With provision available from age 2 upwards, and a wide range of subjects for students at GCSE or A Level, there’s a setting to suit every child.

Central Bedfordshire has a three tier education system: lower schools are from Reception (age 4) to Year 4 (age 8-9), middle schools are Years 5-8 (age 9-13), and upper schools are for Years 9-13 (age 13-18). Here’s an overview of all the schools in Leighton Buzzard.

LOWER SCHOOLS

Beaudesert Lower School, Appenine Way, LU7 3DX

Beaudesert Lower School provides a warm and welcoming environment for 240 children aged 4 to 9, with two classes in each year group. As well as the usual classrooms, there is also a music room, a cookery room, and a nurture/art room. The central hall is used for assemblies, PE and music as well as doubling as the lunchtime canteen. The school grounds include a large field with a climbing frame and trim trail, a willow arch, gazova, seating, and new playground equipment. There is also a Forest School area and a Science Garden.


Clipstone Brook Lower School, Brooklands Drive, LU7 3PG

Clipstone Brook Lower School is a community school that works closely with parents and carers to ensure that the children receive the best outcomes possible in their learning and personal development. There are 300 students, from Nursery (age 3-4) to Year 4 (age 8-9), and the school has a Good Ofsted rating.


Dovery Academy, Heath Rd, LU7 3AG

Dovery Academy is a one form entry lower school set in extensive woodland grounds, which forms the backdrop to its caring and supportive environment. Across the whole school, from pre-school until they leave at the end of Year 4, pupils have access to an extensive enrichment programme which includes music, art, forest school and sport, alongside a range of school trips designed to enhance learning. The school is part of the Knowledge Schools Trust and was awarded a grade of Outstanding by Ofsted in May 2025.

Greenleas School is unique in Leighton Buzzard as it is one school operating across two sites with the same provision at both. It has two classes in each year group from Reception to Year 4 on each site and also offers child-centred Early Education for children aged 2 to 5. It provides a bright and stimulating environment where children can learn and grow as they embark on their learning journey.


Heathwood Lower School, Heath Road, LU7 3BA

Heathwood is an inclusive school where kindness is important and a strong emphasis is placed on values such as trust, cooperation, and responsibility. It has strong support for SEND pupils, whilst the rich curriculum and value-driven approach provide challenges and a broad range of experiences for every child. There is one class in each year group from Reception to Year 4 and they have a good choice of extra-curricular activities, including Spanish Club and Bee Netball.

Leedon Lower School is a large school with 12 classes. Its Early Years provision, which includes Nursery and Reception, is rated Good by Ofsted, and there are two classes in each year group up to Year 4. The school offers a broad and varied curriculum which includes specialist PE and language teaching (Spanish) as well as Forest School for the children in Early Years.

UPPER SCHOOLS

Cedars Upper School is a vibrant community of dedicated staff and motivated, ambitious students. Part of the Chiltern Learning Trust, their GCSE and A Level results are well above national averages and 98% of Sixth Formers gain entry to their first choice university. The school’s mission is to nurture the students into respectful, determined and, most importantly, successful individuals ready for the modern world. At Key Stage 4, students decide if they wish to achieve the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) or study their chosen subjects as GCSEs, BTECs or OCR Nationals, where alternatives are offered. In the Sixth Form provision, rated Outstanding by Ofsted, Cedars offers an ambitious variety of A Level and level 3 equivalent subjects with an established history of student success across the curriculum.

It has a caring environment where all students are supported, as well as challenged, to ensure there is no limit to what they can achieve. There are 1,500 students in Years 9-11, including around 430 in the Sixth Form, and nearly a quarter of all students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme. Its extra-curricular programme currently includes Young Enterprise, public speaking, the school chess team, charity fund-raising, theatre trips, World Challenge expeditions, and study tours to France, Germany, Morocco and further afield. Students from all starting points make strong progress, resulting in exceptional performance in GCSE and A Level exams.
