Garden Jobs for August
August in the Garden: Water Wisely, Harvest Generously
August is likely to continue to be a hot one, so your main task as a gardener is simple: keep things alive and thriving in the heat! Whether you’re tending to a cottage-style garden or a few pots on a patio, there’s plenty to be getting on with.
🌿 Watering Wisely
Water early in the morning or in the evening to reduce evaporation and make sure your plants really benefit. Soak the base of the plantespecially if you’re under a hosepipe ban (which some parts of the UK have seen this year). If you’re going away, ask a neighbour to help or set up a basic irrigation system.
🌻 Deadhead and Feed
Keep annuals like petunias, cosmos, and marigolds flowering by deadheading regularly. Roses can be fed a second time now, and tomatoes in greenhouses or pots will love a weekly tomato feed.
🍓 Harvest Time
August is full of delicious rewards. Pick beans, courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes regularly to keep them coming. If you have an allotment in Leighton Buzzard, you’re probably enjoying bumper crops right now!

🌱 Sow for Autumn and Winter
You can still sow fast-growing salad leaves like rocket and mizuna. Spring cabbages can go in now too.
🌸 Look Ahead
Now’s the time to think about spring bulbs. Daffodils, alliums and crocuses can be ordered now and planted in early autumn.
