Espresso Head to Begin New Chapter as Owner Announces Farewell After 11 Years

One of Leighton Buzzard’s best-loved independent coffee shops is preparing to enter a new chapter as Espresso Head owner Matt has announced he will be handing the business over after 11 years at the helm.

The announcement marks the end of an era for the town centre café, which has become far more than just a place to enjoy coffee. Over the past decade, Espresso Head has established itself as a welcoming community hub where friendships have been formed, conversations shared and generations of families have become familiar faces.

Reflecting on his decision, Matt described it as one of the hardest he has ever had to make. Since taking over the business 11 years ago, Espresso Head has been a significant part of his life, helping build a loyal community of customers while navigating challenges including the Covid pandemic.

In recent years, however, life has changed considerably. Having relocated to the New Forest with his partner and two young sons, alongside growing commitments to other businesses, Matt said he could no longer give Espresso Head the time and attention it deserves.

Rather than allowing standards to slip, he made the decision to find someone who shares the same passion for independent business, quality and community.

That new owner is Alice from Oven at 224, a familiar face to many in Leighton Buzzard. Alice plans to preserve everything customers love about Espresso Head while introducing her own speciality homemade sourdough, pastries and baked goods.

Matt said he is confident Alice will write a wonderful new chapter for the business and hopes customers will welcome her just as warmly as they welcomed him more than a decade ago.

Espresso Head’s final day under Matt’s ownership will be Saturday 1 August. The café will then close briefly while Alice refreshes the premises before reopening in September under her ownership.

Matt has invited customers who have made Espresso Head part of their lives to visit during the final two trading days on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August to enjoy one last coffee, share memories and say goodbye.

He also paid tribute to the many customers who supported the business over the years, from loyal regulars who became friends to visitors who travelled long distances for their favourite coffee.

Special thanks were also given to the café’s baristas past and present, whose dedication helped shape Espresso Head into the business it has become. Matt reserved particular praise for long-serving barista Vicki, who became the familiar face behind the counter after his move away from Leighton Buzzard, ensuring customers continued to receive the same warm welcome and exceptional service each day.

As one chapter closes, Matt says he leaves knowing Espresso Head has a bright future ahead, bringing comfort as he passes the business into new hands after more than a decade of serving the Leighton Buzzard community.
