Celebrate Afternoon Tea Week in Leighton Buzzard 11th – 17th August
Sipping Through History: The Duchess of Bedford and Afternoon Tea
Afternoon Tea, is widely attributed to Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford (1783–1857). Around the 1840s, she experienced a familiar afternoon “hunger” between lunch and the late dinner hour. To assuage this, she began enjoying a light meal of tea, bread, butter, and cakes in the afternoon and it quickly became a beloved daily ritual. Her practice was soon adopted by her friends and spread through society as a charming social tradition.
Over time, this petite meal evolved into the elegant and indulgent experience we know today: refined sandwiches, scones served with jam and clotted cream, sundry pastries, and of course, a curated selection of teas.
