This summer, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service invites residents to consider becoming an on-call firefighter — a rewarding, flexible way to serve your community while balancing everyday life.

On-call firefighters are everyday people — parents, shift workers, freelancers, tradespeople and professionals — who respond to emergencies when needed. Whether attending a fire, a road traffic collision or flooding, this is your chance to make a difference without changing your whole life.

At Toddington, Tom juggles full-time work, parenthood, and being on-call. He said:

“The job can be demanding and you sometimes miss out on social events , but it’s incredibly rewarding. For me, I love doing it, and that’s what keeps me going. You must be committed, but it’s worth it.”

In Ampthill, Abi balances working in a local florist with her on-call duties.

“Being an on-call firefighter is a juggling act—managing work, training, and personal life—but it’s worth it. Being part of a great team and helping the community we love makes it the best thing I’ve ever done.”

We’re predominantly looking for cover during afternoons and early evenings at our stations in Toddington, Kempston, Potton, Ampthill, Harrold, Shefford and Woburn.
